Central Heating in Liverpool

Central Heating Engineers for the Whole System, Not Just the Boiler

Installation, repair, radiators and controls, treated as one system rather than a collection of separate jobs, so the heat actually gets where it needs to go.

Gas Safe registered no. 576059 · fixed written price before any work starts

A boiler is one component in a central heating system, and it can be working perfectly while the system around it is not: radiators that never get properly hot, rooms that heat unevenly, pipework carrying decades of sludge, or controls that were never set up to match how the house is actually used. A central heating engineer looks at the system as a whole rather than treating each symptom as a one-off call-out.

Harrison E Jones Heating is Gas Safe registered under number 576059, licence 3715984, and we carry out central heating installation, repairs, radiator work and system upgrades across Liverpool, Knowsley, Halton and St Helens. Every price is agreed in writing before work starts.

This page covers the system-level work: getting heat evenly distributed, fixing systems that have developed faults over years rather than days, and upgrading controls and components so an existing boiler performs the way it should.

Thinking about heating as a system, not a series of parts

A central heating system is the boiler, the pipework, the radiators, the pump, the controls and the water treatment inside it, all working together. A fault in one part often shows up as a symptom somewhere else entirely: a failing pump can present as radiators that are lukewarm rather than hot, and a system full of sludge can present as a boiler that keeps cutting out even though the boiler itself is fine. Diagnosing the system rather than just the symptom is what stops the same complaint coming back three months after a repair.

This system-level approach matters most in older properties where the heating has been added to, altered or partially replaced over many years, because those are exactly the systems where different parts were sized, fitted or maintained by different people at different times, and the mismatches between them cause most of the ongoing problems.

Central heating installation: sizing the whole system correctly

A full central heating installation means the boiler, the pipework, the radiators and the controls are all specified together against the actual heat loss of the property, rather than a boiler being dropped in and the existing radiators reused regardless of whether they were ever the right size. We calculate the heating requirement room by room before recommending a boiler output or a radiator schedule.

This matters most for properties with no existing wet heating system, properties converting from electric storage heating, and renovations where floors are already up and pipework can be run properly rather than clipped around the edges of a finished room.

Central heating repairs: tracing faults rather than guessing

Common heating faults include radiators that stay cold at the top or bottom, a system that loses pressure repeatedly, noise from the pump or pipework, and zones or rooms that never seem to reach temperature regardless of how long the heating runs. Each of these has a specific cause: trapped air, a failed pump, a blocked pipe run, a faulty valve, or sludge circulating through the system, and the right repair depends on identifying which one it actually is.

We diagnose the fault before quoting a fix, and the price we agree in writing covers that specific repair, so you are not paying to have parts swapped speculatively until something happens to work.

Radiator installation: adding, replacing and correctly sizing

Radiator work covers adding a radiator to a room that has never had one, replacing an old or damaged radiator, and upsizing a radiator that was undersized for the room from the outset, which is common in extensions and loft conversions where a radiator was fitted to match what was in stock rather than what the room actually needed. We size radiators against the room's heat loss, not just against the radiator that used to be there.

When we replace a radiator we also check the associated pipework and valves, because reusing a corroded or undersized valve on a new radiator simply carries the old problem into the new installation.

Heating system upgrades: getting more from what you already have

Not every heating problem needs a new boiler. Upgrading controls, adding thermostatic radiator valves where they are missing, fitting a weather compensation or load compensation control where the boiler supports it, or adding zone control so upstairs and downstairs can be heated independently, can significantly improve comfort and running cost from an existing boiler that still has years of life left in it.

We look at what a system already has before recommending an upgrade, and we will tell you plainly if the existing boiler is the limiting factor and an upgrade to controls alone will not solve the underlying problem.

Balancing and power flushing: fixing systems that heat unevenly

System balancing adjusts the flow through each radiator so that heat is distributed evenly across the property instead of the radiators nearest the boiler getting hot first and taking most of the available flow. It is a job that is often skipped after a partial repair or a radiator swap, and its absence is one of the most common reasons a system heats unevenly even though every individual radiator works.

A power flush forces a high-volume flow of water and cleaning chemical through the system to remove sludge, corrosion debris and scale that build up over years, particularly in systems with steel radiators and no inhibitor. A flush is often the difference between a boiler that keeps needing repairs and one that runs reliably, because a boiler's heat exchanger and pump are the components most vulnerable to circulating debris.

Controls and zoning: heating the rooms you actually use

Modern controls let a system heat different parts of the house on different schedules, rather than treating the whole property as one zone that is either fully on or fully off. For a lot of households this means not heating bedrooms during the day and not heating living areas overnight, which reduces running cost without any change to the boiler itself.

We fit and configure programmable thermostats, thermostatic radiator valves and, where the property layout supports it, zone valves that split heating into separate circuits, and we explain how to actually use the controls once they are fitted rather than leaving you to work it out from a manual.

Questions

Central Heating: Frequently Asked Questions

My radiators are cold at the top but hot at the bottom, what does that mean?

That is usually trapped air, fixed by bleeding the radiator. If it recurs regularly it can indicate a more persistent air or pressure issue in the system that is worth having checked.

Do I need a power flush before a new radiator is fitted?

Not always. It depends on the age and condition of the existing system and whether there is visible sludge or corrosion debris. We assess this before recommending it.

Can you upgrade controls without replacing the boiler?

In many cases, yes, provided the existing boiler supports the control being fitted. We check this before recommending an upgrade.

How long does a typical radiator replacement take?

A straightforward like-for-like replacement is usually a same-day job; adding a radiator where none existed before takes longer because of the pipework involved.

What areas do you cover?

Liverpool, Knowsley, Halton and St Helens.
