What This Service Is, and Who It Is For
What it is
A central heating installation is the whole system, not just the box on the wall: the boiler, the flue and condensate, the gas supply, the pipework running to every room, the radiators sized to each room's heat loss, the controls that tell it all what to do, and the commissioning paperwork that proves it was set up correctly. We design the system on paper first: output, pipe sizes, radiator sizes, control zones, then fit it to that design so the finished system heats the house evenly instead of roasting the hall and leaving the back bedroom cold.
Who it is for
Homeowners in properties that have never had central heating, houses coming off electric storage heaters or solid fuel, landlords bringing a property up to a lettable standard, and anyone renovating where walls are already open and pipework can be run properly rather than clipped around skirting boards. It is also the right job for houses where decades of extensions and part-repairs have left a system that no longer makes sense.
When you need it
The best time is during a renovation, before floors go down and rooms are decorated, because pipework can be hidden and the labour is far less disruptive. The second best time is spring or early autumn: you are not depending on the heating while the work happens, and you are not queuing behind everyone whose boiler has just failed in a cold snap. If you have no heating at all, we can start immediately.
Why it needs a registered engineer
Gas work is notifiable and legally restricted to Gas Safe registered engineers, and a heating installation is the point where the mistakes are most expensive to undo. An undersized boiler never keeps up in January. An oversized one short-cycles, wears out early and burns gas it did not need to. Pipework that is too narrow starves the far end of the house. None of it shows up on the day the installer leaves: it shows up in your bills and your cold rooms for the next fifteen years.

Putting off a heating installation, or handing it to someone who is not registered, rarely stays a small problem.
Risks and escalating costs
- Unregistered gas work is a criminal offence and it invalidates buildings and contents insurance if anything goes wrong, including a claim that has nothing to do with the boiler itself.
- A system installed without a heat loss calculation is guesswork. You pay for output you never use, or you live with rooms that simply never reach temperature.
- Skipping the system cleanse means old sludge from existing pipework circulates straight into a new boiler's heat exchanger, and most manufacturers will decline the warranty claim when it blocks.
- Damp and condensation follow unheated rooms. Cold external walls and unheated bedrooms grow mould on the plaster, ruin decoration and damage stored belongings.
- In a rental property, a system that cannot heat the rooms to a reasonable standard is a hazard and a compliance problem, not just a comfort complaint.
Mistakes we are called out to fix
- Choosing a boiler by price alone rather than by the output and hot water demand the property actually has.
- Accepting a verbal price. Without a written specification you cannot tell what has been left out: the filter, the inhibitor, the controls, the making good.
- Reusing every existing radiator to save money, then discovering half of them were undersized for the room in the first place.
- Letting a new boiler be fitted with no magnetic filter, then paying for a repair inside three years.
- Not registering the manufacturer warranty, which quietly halves the value of the whole installation.

How We Carry Out the Work, Step by Step

Step 1: Survey and heat loss assessment
We measure the property, look at insulation, glazing, room sizes and how you actually use the house, and calculate the heat requirement room by room. We also check the incoming gas supply, meter position and flue routes, because those decide what is genuinely possible.

Step 2: Written design and fixed price
You get the specification in writing: boiler make, model and output, radiator schedule, controls, pipework route, what is included and what is not, and the total price. Nothing changes on the day unless you ask for it.

Step 3: Installation
Dust sheets down, water and gas isolated, pipework run and pressure tested, radiators hung and valved, boiler mounted, flue and condensate installed to current regulations. Most domestic installations run one to three days depending on the pipework involved.

Step 4: Cleanse, commission and balance
The system is flushed, dosed with inhibitor and protected with a magnetic filter. Then we commission the boiler, take and record combustion readings, and balance every radiator so each room reaches its design temperature at the same rate.

We walk you through the controls in plain English, hand over the Benchmark commissioning record and gas safety documentation, and register the manufacturer warranty on your behalf. Then we clear up and take the rubbish with us.

Central Heating Installation in Detail
Most Merseyside housing stock is solid-wall Victorian terrace, inter-war semi, or post-war and modern estate housing, and each behaves differently. A Victorian terrace with high ceilings, single-brick walls and sash windows loses heat far faster per square metre than a 1990s semi with cavity insulation, so the same floor area needs a very different radiator schedule. We calculate rather than assume, which is why two houses on the same street can end up with different boiler outputs.
Boiler choice follows the hot water demand more often than the heating demand. A one-bathroom house with a single shower is usually a straightforward combi installation. A property with two bathrooms used at the same time, or with low incoming mains flow rate, is often better on a system boiler with an unvented cylinder, because a combi cannot deliver two hot showers at once no matter what output is printed on the badge. We measure the mains flow and pressure before recommending either.
Pipework matters as much as the appliance. We size flow and return pipework to carry the design flow rate to the furthest radiator, run it in continuous lengths wherever floors allow rather than joining under a floor we cannot inspect, and use full-bore isolation so future repairs do not mean draining the house. Where we lift floorboards we notch and support joists correctly rather than cutting through them.
Controls are where a good installation earns its money back. A programmable room thermostat, thermostatic radiator valves on every radiator except the one in the thermostat's room, and weather or load compensation where the boiler supports it, let the system run at lower flow temperatures. Lower flow temperature is what actually makes a condensing boiler condense, and that efficiency gain is real money on a quarterly bill.

Sometimes. We check each radiator against the heat requirement of its room. Where an existing radiator is the right size and in sound condition, keeping it saves you money. Where it was undersized to begin with, we will tell you and price the replacement so you can decide.
What guarantee comes with the work?
The boiler carries the manufacturer's warranty, which we register on your behalf as part of the handover, and the length depends on the model and brand you choose. We will confirm the exact warranty term for your chosen boiler in the written quote.
How long should a new central heating system last?
Pipework and radiators commonly last decades. A modern condensing boiler that is serviced annually, running on a cleansed system with inhibitor and a magnetic filter, typically gives many years of reliable service, and annual servicing is also what keeps the manufacturer warranty valid.
Do you install heating in rental properties?
Yes, regularly. We work to appointment slots that suit tenants, issue the certification the same day wherever possible, and email digital copies straight through to the landlord or managing agent.
