Overview

## What This Service Is, and Who It Is For

### What it is
A heating upgrade improves an existing system rather than replacing all of it. That can mean converting a tank-and-cylinder system to a sealed combi, replacing an oversized boiler with correctly sized output, adding zoning and smart controls, upgrading undersized pipework, or cleansing and protecting a system that has been left unprotected for years. We identify which of those actually change your bills and your reliability, and which are just spending.

### Who it is for
Households with a system that works but costs too much or heats unevenly, people reclaiming an airing cupboard and loft tank space, anyone still on a mechanical timer and a single thermostat, and landlords wanting to reduce callouts on ageing systems.

### When you need it
When your boiler still works but is nearing the end of its life and you want to plan rather than react; when bills are high relative to the size of the property; when you are redecorating or converting a loft; or when the system has never had a magnetic filter or inhibitor.

### Why it needs a registered engineer
The efficiency printed on a boiler is a laboratory figure at a specific flow temperature. Whether you ever see it depends on sizing, controls and how clean the system is, which is exactly what an upgrade addresses. Getting it wrong in the other direction is equally real: an oversized boiler fitted with no controls will short-cycle, wear out early and cost more to run than the unit it replaced.

The cost of leaving it

## What Happens If This Gets Left
Leaving a tired system alone is a decision with a price attached, and the price is paid quarterly.

### Risks and escalating costs

- An oversized boiler short-cycles: firing and stopping repeatedly, which wears out fans, ignition components and heat exchangers years early.
- Without weather compensation or proper controls, a condensing boiler runs at flow temperatures too high to condense, so you lose the efficiency you paid for.
- A system with no inhibitor and no filter builds sludge, and sludge ends in a blocked heat exchanger: the single most expensive component on the boiler.
- Heating the whole house because you cannot zone it means paying to warm empty rooms every evening.
- Old open-vented systems with loft tanks carry a real risk of overflow and freeze damage that sealed systems do not have.

### Mistakes we are called out to fix

- Replacing a boiler with the same output as the old one out of habit, when the property's heat loss no longer needs it.
- Fitting an expensive smart thermostat onto a system with no thermostatic radiator valves and no balancing, then seeing almost no saving.
- Converting to a combi without measuring incoming mains flow rate, which is how you end up with a poor shower in a new system.
- Upgrading the boiler and leaving undersized or sludged pipework in place.
- Skipping the magnetic filter to save a modest amount, then funding a repair with it.

Our process

## How We Carry Out the Work, Step by Step

- 1
### Step 1: System assessment
We survey what you have: boiler type and output, pipework sizing and condition, radiator schedule, controls, system water condition and incoming mains flow and pressure. That tells us where the actual losses are.

- 2
### Step 2: Upgrade options in writing
You get a prioritised written specification, what will make the biggest difference, what it costs, and what is optional. If something on your wish list will not pay you back, we say so.

- 3
### Step 3: Cleanse and protect
Chemical cleanse or powerflush where the system needs it, fresh inhibitor and a magnetic filter fitted, so the upgraded system starts clean and stays clean.

- 4
### Step 4: Upgrade works
Boiler swap or conversion, pipework corrections, additional or resized radiators, zone valves, and controls installed and wired.

- 5
### Step 5: Commission, optimise and hand over
Combustion readings recorded, flow temperature and controls set for efficient operation rather than factory defaults, radiators balanced, and everything explained so you can actually use it.

What you get

## The Difference It Makes

### Lower gas use for the same comfort
Correct output, proper controls and a lower flow temperature keep the boiler condensing, which is where the real saving lives.

### Fewer breakdowns
A cleansed, protected, correctly sized system stops thrashing its own components, and that shows up as fewer callouts.

### Space back in the house
Combi conversions free the airing cupboard and remove loft tanks, and remove the freeze and overflow risk with them.

### Zoned heating
Heat the rooms and the times you actually use, instead of one setting for the whole property.

### Protected warranty
Cleanse, inhibitor, filter and registration are the conditions manufacturers check. We do them as part of the job.

### A planned spend, not an emergency one
Upgrading before failure means you choose the boiler and the date, rather than taking whatever is available in a cold snap.

In detail

## What a Heating Upgrade Actually Involves
Conventional to combi conversion is the most common upgrade we carry out in Merseyside terraces and semis. It removes the cold water storage tank from the loft, the feed and expansion tank, the hot water cylinder and its immersion, and converts the system to sealed operation with an expansion vessel and pressure relief. The gains are space, mains-pressure hot water and the end of freeze risk in the loft. The condition is flow rate: if the incoming main cannot deliver enough litres per minute, a combi will disappoint no matter which model you buy, so we measure first and tell you honestly if a system boiler and cylinder is the better answer.

Controls upgrades are the cheapest meaningful efficiency work available, provided they are done as a set. A programmable or smart thermostat gives you scheduling and remote control. Thermostatic radiator valves on every radiator except the reference room give you room-by-room control. Zoning with motorised valves separates upstairs from downstairs. And where the boiler supports weather or load compensation, matching flow temperature to demand keeps the boiler in condensing mode far more of the time. Individually each helps a little; together they change the bill.

System protection is unglamorous and pays consistently. A powerflush or chemical cleanse removes the magnetite and debris that restricts circulation. Inhibitor stops it re-forming. A magnetic filter on the return catches what does form before it reaches the heat exchanger, and gets emptied at each annual service. On any system more than a few years old with no filter, this is usually the first thing we recommend, because it protects everything else you are about to spend money on.

Pipework and emitters set the ceiling on what controls can achieve. Microbore that has partially blocked, 8mm feeds to large radiators, or a system where the far end has always been cold will not be fixed by a thermostat. Where we find those, we say so plainly and price the correction, because there is no point selling efficiency upgrades on top of a hydraulic problem.

### Residential and commercial properties
Upgrades are mostly domestic: owner-occupied houses, flats and rental properties where running cost and callout frequency both matter. Small commercial premises on domestic-type systems are within scope; industrial plant is not.

Questions

## Heating System Upgrades: Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a heating system upgrade cost?It ranges from a modest controls-and-protection package to a full combi conversion, so we price it as a written specification against your property. New boilers start from £1,299 fully fitted, and we show you the cost of each element so you can choose what to do now and what to leave.

Will an upgrade really lower my gas bill?Correct sizing, working controls and a clean protected system all reduce consumption, and we will explain which elements in your property carry the biggest effect. What we will not do is promise you a percentage figure, that depends on how you heat the house, the insulation and the weather.

How long does a combi conversion take?Typically one to two days, depending on how much redundant pipework has to be removed and where the new boiler is going. The written quote states the expected duration.

Is a smart thermostat worth it?It is worth it on a system that already has thermostatic radiator valves and is properly balanced. On a system without them, spend the money on the valves and the balancing first, that is where the saving actually comes from.

Do I need a powerflush before a new boiler? You need the system to be clean. Sometimes that means a chemical cleanse; on a heavily sludged system it means a powerflush. We assess the system water and tell you which, because manufacturers will check system cleanliness if you ever make a warranty claim.

Can I upgrade in stages?Yes, and often that is the sensible route. We give you a prioritised list so you can do the protection and controls now and the boiler later, without any of it being wasted work.

What guarantee applies to upgrade work?Any new boiler carries the manufacturer's warranty for its model, which we register on your behalf. We confirm the exact warranty term for your chosen boiler in the written quote.

Which areas do you cover for upgrades?Liverpool, Knowsley, Halton and St Helens, including Huyton, Prescot, Crosby, Woolton, Widnes, Runcorn and Newton-le-Willows. We answer the phone seven days a week, 8:30am to 5:30pm, and we tell you the same day whether we can get to you.
