Overview

## What This Service Is, and Who It Is For

### What it is
Radiator work covers replacing tired or leaking radiators, adding radiators to rooms that never had enough heat, swapping panel radiators for column or designer models, and fitting heated towel rails in bathrooms. Every installation includes sizing the radiator to the room's heat loss, fitting thermostatic and lockshield valves, and balancing the whole system afterwards so the new radiator does not steal flow from the rest of the house.

### Who it is for
Homeowners redecorating or replacing rusted radiators, anyone with a room that has never been warm enough, households converting a box room or extending into a new space, and landlords replacing radiators that are past economic repair.

### When you need it
When a radiator is leaking, weeping at the valve, permanently cold at the base after cleansing, visibly corroding, or simply too small for the room. Also whenever you are decorating: it is far easier to change a radiator before the wall behind it is painted than after.

### Why it needs a registered engineer
It is not just unbolting and rebolting. Get the size wrong and the room stays cold or the boiler cycles unnecessarily. Get the valves or the balancing wrong and you move the problem to another room. And every time the system is opened up it loses inhibitor, so it needs re-dosing, which is the step most often skipped and the reason radiators start corroding again a year later.

The cost of leaving it

## What Happens If This Gets Left
A radiator that is wrong for its room is not a cosmetic issue; it costs money every day the heating is on.

### Risks and escalating costs

- An undersized radiator means the room never reaches temperature, so the thermostat keeps the boiler running longer for the whole house.
- A corroding radiator eventually pinholes, and a pinhole leak on a first floor damages ceilings, decoration and flooring below.
- Cold rooms condense moisture on external walls, and that is how black mould starts on plaster and around window reveals.
- Adding radiators without checking the boiler's capacity or pipe sizing simply weakens circulation everywhere else.
- Losing inhibitor every time the system is drained accelerates internal corrosion across every radiator you own, not just the new one.

### Mistakes we are called out to fix

- Choosing a radiator by how it looks and hoping the output is enough for the room.
- Fitting a designer or column radiator with a much lower output than the panel radiator it replaced, then wondering why the room got colder.
- Reusing old valves that are already weeping, so the new radiator is fitted to a leak.
- Not balancing the system afterwards, which is why one new radiator can make two old ones go lukewarm.
- Refilling without re-dosing inhibitor.

Our process

## How We Carry Out the Work, Step by Step

- 1
### Step 1: Room-by-room sizing
We measure the room, account for external walls, glazing and ceiling height, and calculate the output the radiator actually needs, then match that to a model that fits the space you have available.

- 2
### Step 2: Written price and model confirmation
You get the model, size, output, valve type and total price in writing. If you have a style preference, we find the option that meets the output requirement rather than just the one that looks right.

- 3
### Step 3: Installation
System isolated or drained as needed, brackets fixed securely into sound substrate, pipework adjusted or extended where the new radiator's centres differ, and thermostatic and lockshield valves fitted.

- 4
### Step 4: Refill, dose and vent
The system is refilled, dosed with inhibitor to replace what was lost, and fully vented so there is no air left sitting in the top of any radiator.

- 5
### Step 5: Balance and verify
We balance every radiator on the system using flow and return temperatures, confirm the new radiator heats fully across its whole surface, check for weeps under working pressure, and clear up.

What you get

## The Difference It Makes

### Rooms that finally reach temperature
Output matched to the room's real heat loss, so you are not compensating with a higher thermostat setting for the whole house.

### Room-by-room control
Thermostatic valves let you turn down the rooms you are not using instead of heating the whole property to the same temperature.

### Whole-system balance
We balance every radiator, not just the new one, so the change improves the system rather than shifting the problem elsewhere.

### Leaks prevented, not inherited
New valves and properly remade joints, tested under working pressure before we leave.

### Corrosion protection restored
Inhibitor re-dosed after every drain-down, which is what keeps the radiators you already own from sludging up.

### Neat, finished work
Pipework aligned, brackets level, walls and floors protected, and the old radiator taken away with us.

In detail

## Radiator Types, Sizing and Fitting Detail
Radiator output is quoted in watts or BTUs at a stated temperature difference, and the number on the box assumes a flow temperature many modern systems no longer run at. If your system runs at a lower flow temperature for efficiency, the same radiator delivers less heat, which is why like-for-like replacement by physical size, rather than by required output, so often leaves a room cooler than before. We size against the room, then check the model's output at your system's actual operating temperature.

Style changes output. A double-panel, double-convector radiator delivers far more heat per metre of wall than a flat-panel designer radiator of identical dimensions, and traditional cast-style column radiators sit somewhere between. Vertical radiators solve the problem of rooms with no free horizontal wall, and often need a taller, narrower footprint to hit the same output. Heated towel rails, useful as they are, produce comparatively little heat, so a bathroom heated by a towel rail alone frequently needs a second heat source.

Fitting quality is mostly about brackets, valves and pipe centres. Column and cast-iron style radiators are heavy when full of water and need fixing into sound masonry or properly located studs, not plasterboard alone. Valve tails must be sealed correctly, and thermostatic valves need to be fitted on the correct side with the flow direction the manufacturer specifies. Where new pipe centres do not match the old, we adjust the pipework rather than force the radiator to sit crooked.

Balancing is the step that turns a set of radiators into a system. Using the lockshield valves, we restrict flow to the radiators nearest the boiler so that water is forced out to the far end of the circuit, and we verify it by measuring the temperature difference across each radiator's flow and return. Done properly, every room warms at a similar rate. Skipped, the first radiators on the circuit take most of the heat and the rest never catch up.

### Residential and commercial properties
Domestic radiator work in houses, flats and rentals is our day-to-day. Small commercial premises on domestic-style wet systems: offices, shops, salons: are also covered, though usage and heat gain from equipment change the sizing, so tell us what happens in the room and we will factor it in.

### Variations of this service

- Like-for-like replacement

Swapping a corroded or leaking radiator for a correctly sized modern equivalent, reusing existing pipework where it is sound.

- Additional radiators

Extending pipework to rooms, extensions and conversions that have never had enough heat, after checking system capacity.

- Designer and column radiators

Vertical, flat-panel and traditional column models chosen so the style you want still meets the output the room needs.

- Heated towel rails

Bathroom towel rails fitted with the correct valves, plus honest advice on whether the room needs additional output.

### Materials, parts and equipment

- Steel panel radiators: single, double and convector types
- Column, vertical and flat-panel designer radiators
- Chrome and anthracite heated towel rails
- Thermostatic radiator valves, lockshield valves and angled or straight tails
- Copper and press-fit pipework adjustments
- Central heating inhibitor for re-dosing after drain-down

Questions

## Radiator Installation: Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to replace a radiator in Liverpool? It depends on the radiator type and size, whether the valves and pipework need changing, and whether the system has to be drained. We give you a fixed written price covering radiator, valves, labour and disposal before we start.

How long does a radiator replacement take?A straightforward like-for-like swap is usually a couple of hours. Adding a new radiator with fresh pipework takes longer, and several radiators in one visit is normally a full day including refilling, dosing and balancing.

Can you add a radiator to a room that does not have one?Usually yes. We check that your boiler and pipework have capacity for the extra load first: adding output to a system already at its limit weakens every other radiator, so that check is not optional.

Why is my radiator cold at the bottom? That is the classic sign of sludge settling where flow is slowest. A cleanse, inhibitor and a magnetic filter usually resolve it. Cold at the top instead means trapped air, which is a different fix.

Will a designer radiator heat my room as well as the old one?Only if its output matches. Flat-panel designer radiators often produce less heat than the double-panel radiator they replace at the same physical size. We check output figures at your system's operating temperature and tell you before you order.

How long do radiators last?Steel panel radiators on a system that is kept dosed with inhibitor commonly last a couple of decades or more. On a system that has been repeatedly drained and refilled without inhibitor, internal corrosion shortens that considerably.

Do you take the old radiator away?Yes. The old radiator and any packaging goes with us, and we leave the area clean.

Do you fit radiators outside Liverpool? We cover Liverpool, Knowsley, Halton and St Helens, including Huyton, Prescot, Whiston, Widnes, Runcorn and Newton-le-Willows. We answer the phone seven days a week, 8:30am to 5:30pm, and we tell you the same day whether we can get to you.
