Overview
What This Service Is, and Who It Is For
What it is
A boiler repair is a structured diagnosis and a component-level fix. We read fault history and live operating data, test electrics, gas pressures, flow and combustion, identify the failed component, and quote the repair before carrying it out. Safety checks form part of every visit, because a fault on a gas appliance is a safety question as well as a comfort one.
Who it is for
Anyone with a boiler that has locked out, is displaying a fault code, is leaking, is producing no hot water or heating, or has become noisy and unreliable: homeowners and landlords alike.
When you need it
Immediately for a lockout, a leak, a smell of gas or any sign of spillage. Promptly for intermittent faults, because intermittent faults on gas appliances tend to become permanent ones, usually on the coldest evening of the year.
Why it needs a registered engineer
Boiler internals are gas, electricity and pressurised water in one cabinet, and work on them is legally restricted to Gas Safe registered engineers. Beyond the legal point, most of the value in a repair is the diagnosis. The same fault code can be a sensor, a blockage, a pump, a gas pressure issue or a flue problem: swapping parts until it clears is how repair bills triple.
The cost of leaving it
What Happens If This Gets Left
A boiler fault left running is not a stable situation; it is a fault that is doing further damage.
Risks and escalating costs
- Ignoring a low-pressure or leak fault means the system keeps being refilled with oxygenated water, which corrodes radiators and sludges the heat exchanger.
- Repeatedly resetting a locked-out boiler bypasses the safety function that stopped it, without addressing what triggered it.
- Combustion faults, a blocked flue or a cracked heat exchanger can allow carbon monoxide into the room: this is the reason boiler faults are not DIY territory.
- Running with kettling or restricted flow overheats the heat exchanger, turning an inexpensive fix into the most expensive component on the appliance.
- No hot water in a rental is an urgent repair obligation, and delay turns a repair into a complaint.
Mistakes we are called out to fix
- Pressing reset repeatedly. Three resets on the same fault is a message, not a solution.
- Topping up through the filling loop every week instead of finding the leak.
- Buying a part online based on a fault code from a forum, then paying an engineer to fit the wrong component.
- Using leak-sealing additives that block plate heat exchangers and valves.
- Letting an unregistered handyman open a gas appliance: illegal, uninsurable and genuinely dangerous.
Our process
How We Carry Out the Work, Step by Step
- 1
Step 1: Phone triage
We take the fault code, the symptoms, the pressure reading and the boiler make and model. That tells us which parts to load, so more first visits end in a completed repair.
- 2
Step 2: Diagnosis on site
Fault history read, live operating data checked, electrical and sensor testing, gas working pressure and combustion analysis, water pressure and flow checks. We identify the component, not just the symptom.
- 3
Step 3: Fixed repair price
You are told what has failed, what the repair costs, and whether it is worth doing on a boiler of that age and condition. Work only starts once you agree.
- 4
Step 4: Repair
The failed component is replaced with the correct part, connections remade, system refilled and re-dosed with inhibitor where it has been drained.
- 5
Step 5: Verification and safety check
Full heating and hot water cycle run, combustion readings taken and recorded, gas tightness verified, and the original fault confirmed gone before we leave.
What you get
The Difference It Makes
Diagnosis before parts
You pay for the component that actually failed, not a sequence of guesses billed by the hour.
Fixed price up front
The repair cost is agreed before work begins, so there is no open-ended bill at the end.
Often fixed on the first visit
Common failure parts travel with us, so routine faults are usually repaired the same visit rather than booked in twice.
Safety checked as standard
Combustion readings and gas safety checks are part of every repair on the gas side, not an extra line on the invoice.
Honest repair-or-replace advice
If a repair is money into a boiler that is finished, we show you the figures both ways and let you decide.
All major brands
We repair the major domestic brands and install Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi and Heatline, so we know these appliances well.
In detail
Common Boiler Faults and How We Approach Them
Ignition and flame-loss faults are the most frequent lockouts we attend. The cause can be gas supply pressure, a failed ignition electrode or lead, a dirty or failed flame sensing electrode, a fan or air pressure switch fault, condensate blockage causing a trapped flue, or a gas valve issue. The approach is measurement: working and standing gas pressure, fan speed feedback, condensate flow, ionisation current, rather than replacing the cheap part first and moving up the price list.
Hot water faults on combis split neatly. Lukewarm water that starts hot and fades usually means a scaled or blocked plate heat exchanger; no hot water at all with heating working points at the diverter valve or its actuator; erratic temperature often traces to a flow sensor or a partially blocked cold inlet filter. On systems with a cylinder, the equivalent faults live in the motorised valve, the cylinder thermostat and the wiring centre, and the boiler itself is often blameless.
Pressure and leak faults have a defined list of causes: a failed expansion vessel, a passing pressure relief valve, a leaking joint, valve or radiator, or a corroded pipe under a floor. We test the vessel charge and inspect the external discharge before assuming a hidden leak, because a discharged vessel is common, inexpensive and frequently misdiagnosed. Where a leak is real, we trace it and repair it rather than sealing it chemically.
Noise and overheating faults tell you about system condition. Kettling means scale or restricted flow across the heat exchanger, and on a system with sludge the repair has to include cleansing or it will return. Overheat lockouts often come from poor circulation: a failing pump, closed valves, or an air lock, rather than the boiler itself. Where the underlying cause is a dirty system, we say so and price the cleanse, because replacing a part into a dirty system just buys a return visit.
Residential and commercial properties
We repair domestic gas boilers in houses, flats, HMOs and rental properties. Light commercial premises using domestic-type appliances are covered too; commercial plant and industrial boilers are not, and we will tell you immediately if a job is outside our scope.

Questions
Boiler Repairs: Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a boiler repair cost?
It depends on which part has failed, so we diagnose first and give you a fixed repair price before doing any work. You decide whether to proceed once you know the number: there is no hourly meter running while we investigate.
How quickly can you attend a boiler breakdown?
We answer the phone seven days a week, 8:30am to 5:30pm, and we tell you the same day whether we can get to you. Tell us when you ring if you have no heating or hot water at all, because those calls are prioritised.
What does my boiler's fault code mean?
Codes are brand-specific and usually describe a symptom rather than a cause: the same code can point to several different components. Give us the code and the model when you ring and we will tell you the likely candidates and bring the parts.
Is it safe to keep resetting my boiler?
No. A lockout is a safety function doing its job. Resetting repeatedly bypasses the warning without fixing what caused it. If it locks out more than once, stop and have it looked at.
Will you fit a part I have bought myself?
We would rather diagnose first. A part bought on the strength of a fault code is often the wrong one, and you carry the cost of that mistake plus the labour. We supply the correct component and stand behind the diagnosis.
At what point is repairing not worth it?
When parts are obsolete, when the heat exchanger is compromised, or when the repair costs a large share of a new fully fitted installation from £1,299. We show you both figures and let you choose.
Do you repair boilers on Saturdays and Sundays?
Yes: we operate seven days a week, 8:30am to 5:30pm.
Do you carry out repairs across Merseyside?
We cover Liverpool, Knowsley, Halton and St Helens, including Huyton, Prescot, Whiston, Widnes, Runcorn, Crosby, Woolton and Newton-le-Willows.
