Overview

## What This Service Is, and Who It Is For

### What it is
A gas fire service is a full strip-down inspection of the appliance and its flue path, not a quick glance and a wipe. We remove the fire fret and coals or logs, clean the burner and injector, check the ignition and thermocouple or flame supervision device, and test the appliance's gas rate against the manufacturer's data plate. Critically, we also test the chimney or flue it depends on: a spillage test with the fire running and the room sealed up as it would be in normal use, checking that combustion products are actually leaving the building rather than spilling back into the room. A repair follows the same diagnostic approach, working out exactly which component has failed rather than swapping parts and hoping.

### Who it is for
Homeowners with a living-flame gas fire, a decorative fuel-effect fire, or an older inset radiant fire in a lounge or bedroom, tenants and landlords who need the appliance on a rental property checked as part of the annual gas safety inspection, and anyone who has bought a house with a gas fire already fitted and no service history to go on.

### When you need it
Every twelve months as routine, and immediately if you notice yellow or lazy flames instead of crisp blue, soot marks above or around the fire, a smell of gas, a pilot light that will not stay lit, or a headache and drowsiness that lifts when you leave the room. Those symptoms point at incomplete combustion or a flue problem, and both can mean carbon monoxide.

### Why it needs a registered engineer
Gas fires sit closer to occupants than almost any other domestic gas appliance, often in a bedroom or a lounge where people sit for hours, and they depend entirely on a functioning chimney or flue to clear combustion products. A blocked, cracked or poorly lined flue turns a working fire into a carbon monoxide risk with no smell and no warning beyond the symptoms in your body. Servicing is where that risk gets caught before it becomes an emergency.

The cost of leaving it

## What Happens If This Gets Left
Gas fires get overlooked because they look decorative rather than mechanical, but the flue behind the chimney breast is doing real work every time the fire runs.

### Risks and escalating costs

- A flue that has been capped, bridged by loft insulation, or partially blocked by a bird's nest or masonry fall stops combustion products escaping, and they come back into the room instead.
- Carbon monoxide from a badly performing gas fire has no smell and no colour. Early symptoms, headache, nausea, drowsiness, are easily mistaken for tiredness or a cold, especially in a room used for relaxing in the evening.
- Sooting on the fire fret or the chimney breast above it is visible evidence of incomplete combustion and should never be treated as a cosmetic issue to be cleaned off and ignored.
- An open chimney with poor sealing around the fire pulls warm room air straight up the flue continuously, so the fire runs and the room still feels draughty and hard to heat.
- In a let property, a gas fire counted as a fixed appliance must be included in the annual gas safety check. Missing it is a compliance gap that surfaces at the worst possible time, usually during an incident investigation.

### Mistakes we are called out to fix

- Assuming a fire is safe because it lights and produces flames. Ignition working and combustion working properly are two different things.
- Having chimney sweeping done without a spillage test, or vice versa. They check different things and a full check needs both.
- Leaving an older fire with no manufacturer support running indefinitely because it still lights, rather than getting an honest opinion on whether parts are even available if it fails.
- Blocking or bridging a chimney with loft insulation during other building work without telling the engineer who then services the fire below it.
- Ignoring a pilot light that keeps going out. That is very often the flame supervision device doing its job and telling you something is wrong with the flue or air supply.

Our process

## How We Carry Out the Work, Step by Step

- 1
### Step 1: Visual inspection and history check
We check the fire's age, model and any previous service record, look at the fret, coals or logs, seals and the hearth, and check the appliance is compatible with the room it sits in, including any ventilation the room needs.

- 2
### Step 2: Strip-down clean and mechanical check
The fret and fuel bed are removed, the burner, injector and ignition components are cleaned and checked, and the case seals that keep the appliance drawing air correctly are inspected for damage or gaps.

- 3
### Step 3: Spillage and flue flow test
With the fire running under normal conditions, doors and windows shut as they would be in use, we test whether combustion products are safely clearing the flue or spilling back into the room, and check the flue or chimney has an adequate flow.

- 4
### Step 4: Combustion performance check
We check the flame picture and, where the appliance allows testing, the combustion readings against the manufacturer's figures, confirming the gas rate matches the data plate rather than running rich or lean.

- 5
### Step 5: Result, certificate and honest recommendation
You get a plain-English explanation of what we found. If the appliance is safe, it is serviced and signed off. If it is not, we explain exactly why, whether it can be repaired, and if not, we disconnect it safely rather than leave a dangerous appliance live.

What you get

## The Difference It Makes

### A flue test, not just a fire clean
Spillage testing checks the part of the system most likely to cause harm, the chimney or flue, which a basic clean and light will not tell you anything about.

### Straight answers on old fires
If parts are no longer available or the fire is at the end of its safe working life, we tell you plainly rather than patching it repeatedly.

### Compliant for landlords
Gas fires are included properly in the annual gas safety inspection, with the certificate covering every fixed gas appliance in the property, not just the boiler.

### Fixed price before work starts
You know the service or repair cost in writing before we begin, with no surprise call-out charges added afterwards.

### Unsafe appliances disconnected, not left running
Where a fire genuinely cannot be made safe, we isolate it properly and explain your options rather than leaving you to decide whether to risk using it.

### Same registered engineer for the whole gas installation
One Gas Safe registered call covers the fire, the boiler and any other gas appliances in the property in a single visit.

In detail

## Gas Fire Servicing and Repairs in Detail
Merseyside has a huge stock of Victorian and Edwardian terraces with original chimney breasts, and a lot of gas fires sitting in fireplace openings that were never designed for a modern balanced or open-flue gas appliance. Some chimneys were relined properly when the fire was fitted; others were not, and decades later nobody in the house knows which. Part of a proper service is establishing what the flue actually is, checking it has not been bridged by later loft insulation or blocked by a capping cowl fitted for a different reason, and confirming the liner, where one exists, is intact.

Living-flame and decorative fuel-effect fires are common in Merseyside lounges because they give the look of an open fire with gas convenience, but they are among the least forgiving appliances when it comes to air supply. Many need a permanently open air vent in the room, not just an openable window, and it is not unusual to find that vent painted over, plastered over during redecoration, or blocked by furniture pushed against a skirting board vent. We check the vent is present, unobstructed and the correct size for the appliance, because restricting the air supply is one of the most common causes of poor combustion in this type of fire.

Repairs on older gas fires run into a real practical limit: parts availability. Many fires fitted fifteen to twenty years ago are long out of production, and thermocouples, piezo ignitors and specific burner assemblies for discontinued models can be genuinely unobtainable. Where that is the case, we say so plainly rather than promising a repair we cannot deliver, and we talk through the realistic options, which is sometimes a straightforward like-for-like replacement fire rather than chasing parts for one that has reached the end of the line.

Where a fire fails a spillage test or shows signs of incomplete combustion, our first priority is safety, not salvage. We will explain what failed and why, whether the fault is in the appliance itself, the flue, the room's ventilation, or a combination, and if the appliance cannot be made safe on the day, we disconnect it and label it clearly rather than leave you to make that call. Reconnection only happens once the underlying fault, whether that is a flue repair, a vent being unblocked, or a parts replacement, is actually resolved.

### Residential and commercial properties
We service and repair gas fires in houses, flats and rental properties across Merseyside, including older solid-fuel-converted chimney breasts and modern balanced-flue inset fires in newer builds. Tell us the fire's brand and approximate age when you book so we can check parts availability before the visit wherever possible.

Questions

## Gas Fire Service: Frequently Asked Questions
How often should a gas fire be serviced?Once a year as routine, in the same way as a boiler. If the fire is in a let property it needs to be included in the annual landlord gas safety inspection alongside every other fixed gas appliance.

What does a spillage test actually check? It checks whether combustion products from the fire are safely clearing the chimney or flue, or spilling back into the room, by running the fire under normal conditions with doors and windows shut and testing at the draught diverter or flue outlet.

My gas fire has yellow flames instead of blue, is that dangerous? It can be. Yellow or lazy flames often point to incomplete combustion, which can mean carbon monoxide is being produced. Stop using the fire and get it checked rather than waiting for the next scheduled service.

Can you get parts for an old gas fire?Sometimes, but not always. Many fires more than fifteen years old are out of production and specific components, particularly ignition parts, can become unobtainable. We will tell you honestly during diagnosis if that is the case for your model.

Why has my pilot light stopped staying lit?Usually the flame supervision device or thermocouple has failed, but it can also be a sign of a flue or air supply problem the safety device is correctly reacting to. We diagnose the actual cause rather than just replacing the thermocouple by default.

Do I need a permanently open vent for a gas fire? Many gas fires, particularly living-flame and fuel-effect models, need a permanently open air vent in the room, separate from an openable window. We check the correct vent is present and unobstructed as part of every service.

What happens if my gas fire fails the safety check? We explain exactly what failed and why. If it can be repaired, we quote for that in writing. If it genuinely cannot be made safe, we disconnect and label it so it cannot be used until the fault is fixed.

Do you cover gas fire servicing across Merseyside?Yes, across Liverpool, Knowsley, Halton and St Helens, including terraced housing with older chimney breasts and newer builds with balanced-flue inset fires. We answer the phone seven days a week, 8:30am to 5:30pm.
