Gas Safe registered no. 576059 · fixed written price before any work starts

Plumber is a broad word, and it covers a wide range of work, from bathroom fitting to drainage to general pipework, much of which is outside what we do. Harrison E Jones Heating is a heating and gas engineering business, and the plumbing work we carry out is specifically the pipework and components that are part of a central heating or hot water system: the pipes feeding radiators, the valves that control them, the cylinders that store hot water, and the leaks and faults that show up on that system.

If you need a bathroom refitted, a new toilet installed unrelated to the heating system, or a blocked drain cleared, that is not work we take on, and we would rather tell you that plainly than take a job outside our area. Gas Safe registered under number 576059, licence 3715984, and covering Liverpool, Knowsley, Halton and St Helens.

This page sets out exactly what heating-related plumbing work we do, so you know whether we are the right call before you pick up the phone.

## What we mean by heating plumbing, and what we do not cover
The plumbing work connected to a central heating system includes the pipework that carries hot water to radiators, the valves that control flow into and out of each radiator, the pipework connecting a boiler to a hot water cylinder, and the pipework and fittings around a boiler itself. It does not include bathroom suite fitting, kitchen sink plumbing, drainage or waste pipework, or general plumbing unrelated to the heating and hot water system.

We are upfront about this distinction because a lot of general plumbers do not hold Gas Safe registration, and a lot of heating specialists get asked to quote work outside their scope. If your job is genuinely heating or gas related, we are equipped and registered to do it properly. If it is not, we will tell you so rather than take it on regardless.

## Heating pipework: runs, repairs and alterations
Pipework is what actually delivers heat around a property, and it needs to be sized correctly, run without unnecessary bends that restrict flow, and installed so that isolation valves allow future repairs without draining the whole system. Common pipework jobs include extending a heating circuit to a new radiator, rerouting pipework during a renovation, replacing sections that have corroded, and correcting pipework that was undersized or badly routed in a previous job.

Where pipework is being altered as part of a wider renovation, we coordinate with the rest of the build so pipes are run before floors and walls are closed up, rather than being an afterthought once decoration is finished.

## Radiator and valve work
Radiator plumbing covers installing new radiators, replacing old or leaking ones, and fitting or replacing the valves that control them, including thermostatic radiator valves and lockshield valves that need setting correctly for the system to balance properly. A radiator that will not heat evenly, will not bleed properly, or leaks at the valve connection is usually a straightforward diagnosis and fix rather than a sign the whole system is failing.

We size any replacement radiator against the room's actual heat loss rather than simply matching whatever was there before, which matters particularly in extensions and converted rooms where the original radiator was often undersized from the start.

## Cylinder and tank removal or replacement
Hot water cylinders and cold water storage tanks are common in older heating systems and in properties converting from a heat-only or conventional system to a combi or unvented system boiler setup. Removing a redundant cylinder and tank frees up airing cupboard and loft space, but it needs to be done properly: pipework capped correctly, the system re-piped to work without the removed components, and any electrical connections to an immersion heater dealt with safely.

Where a system is being converted rather than simply having a faulty cylinder replaced like-for-like, we plan the pipework changes as part of the wider installation rather than treating cylinder removal as an isolated job.

## Leaks on heating and hot water pipework
A leak on a heating system can show up as a damp patch near a radiator, a pressure gauge that keeps dropping without an obvious cause, or staining around a pipe joint or cylinder connection. Tracing the actual source matters, because a leak at a joint under a floor can travel some distance before it becomes visible, and repairing the visible symptom without finding the source means the problem comes back.

We isolate and pressure test sections of pipework to locate leaks before opening anything up unnecessarily, which keeps disruption to floors and walls to a minimum.

## Condensate pipework: a common and avoidable winter fault
Condensate is the mildly acidic water produced by a modern condensing boiler as a normal part of its operation, and it drains away through a dedicated condensate pipe, often routed externally. In cold weather that pipe can freeze if it was run externally without adequate fall or insulation, and a frozen condensate pipe is one of the most common causes of a boiler locking out on winter mornings.

We can correctly route, insulate or reroute condensate pipework to reduce the risk of freezing, and if your boiler keeps cutting out in cold weather specifically, this is one of the first things worth checking before assuming a more serious fault.

## Filters, inhibitor and system water treatment
A magnetic filter fitted on the pipework near the boiler catches debris circulating in the system before it reaches the boiler's heat exchanger, and it needs periodic cleaning out as part of a service, because a full filter stops doing its job and can itself restrict flow. Inhibitor is the chemical added to the system water to reduce corrosion inside radiators and pipework over time, and it depletes gradually and needs checking and topping up periodically, particularly after any work that involves draining part of the system.

Filter cleaning and inhibitor checks are straightforward maintenance jobs that reduce the likelihood of the bigger, more expensive faults that untreated system water eventually causes.

Questions

## Plumber: Frequently Asked Questions
Do you do general plumbing like bathroom fitting or drains? No, we focus specifically on plumbing connected to central heating and hot water systems: pipework, radiators, valves, cylinders and heating-related leaks.

My boiler keeps cutting out in cold weather, is that a plumbing issue? It is often a frozen condensate pipe, which is a pipework fault rather than a fault with the boiler itself, and one we can fix by correcting the pipe's routing or insulation.

Can you remove an old cylinder and tank when converting to a combi?Yes, as part of a boiler conversion we remove redundant cylinders and tanks and re-pipe the system accordingly.

How do you find a leak that is not visible? We isolate and pressure test sections of the heating pipework to locate the source before opening up any floors or walls unnecessarily.

What areas do you cover?Liverpool, Knowsley, Halton and St Helens.
