# Replacing a Boiler in Halewood: Costs, Timings and Options
Halewood's housing was largely built as part of Liverpool's post-war overspill, and much of it originally relied on back boilers. Here's how we approach modern installations near Halewood Shopping Centre, including back-boiler removal and boiler relocation during kitchen work.

Gas Safe registered no. 576059: fixed written prices before work begins

Halewood expanded significantly from the 1950s onwards as part of Liverpool's post-war overspill programme, and a lot of the housing around Halewood Shopping Centre, Roseheath and Halewood Village still reflects that era. Many of these homes were originally built with a back boiler set into a fireplace, feeding a hot water cylinder elsewhere in the house.

Harrison E Jones Heating carries out boiler installations near Halewood Shopping Centre as part of our Liverpool coverage. We're Gas Safe registered (576059) and licensed (3715984), new boilers are fully fitted from £1,299 with a free Gas Safety Certificate included, and every price is agreed in writing before work starts.

## Post-war estate housing and its quirks
The estate housing around Halewood typically follows a fairly standard layout: a through lounge or separate lounge and dining room, a kitchen at the rear, and bedrooms above. Many of these homes have had at least one heating upgrade since they were built, but we still regularly come across original pipework routes, older radiators, and airing cupboards still holding a hot water cylinder that's no longer strictly needed once a combi boiler is fitted.

Because these houses were built in relatively large numbers to similar designs, we've fitted boilers in enough of them to know where the practical challenges usually sit, whether that's routing new pipework through solid ground floor construction or working around a chimney breast that's still structurally part of the house even if the fireplace itself is long gone.

## Removing an old back boiler
A back boiler sits behind a gas fire in the chimney breast and heats water via a nearby cylinder. They were common in Halewood's original housing stock but are now old technology; many have long since been decommissioned, though the unit itself is often still in place behind the fireplace.

Removing a back boiler is a bigger job than a standard swap. It typically involves capping off the gas supply safely, removing the old unit and fire surround area, and then deciding on the new boiler's location, since a wall-mounted combi or system boiler doesn't sit inside a chimney breast the way a back boiler did. We handle the removal and disconnection safely and in full, then plan the new installation properly rather than simply fitting a new boiler around old redundant pipework.

Once the back boiler is out, the chimney breast area is often freed up for other use, though any building work beyond the heating installation itself would be for a separate tradesperson.

## Boiler relocation during a kitchen refit
It's common for homeowners near Halewood Shopping Centre to plan a boiler move at the same time as a kitchen refit, either to free up cupboard space or because the new kitchen design doesn't suit the boiler's current position. We work around kitchen refit timelines where we can, coordinating with homeowners so the heating work fits sensibly around units, worktops and appliance installation.

Relocating a boiler means running new gas, water, electrical and condensate pipework to the new position, and planning a new flue route to an external wall or the roof. We look at the practicalities early, so the new boiler position works both for the finished kitchen design and for future servicing access, and we agree the relocation price in writing before committing to it.

If you're planning a kitchen refit and want the boiler moved, it's worth getting us involved at the design stage rather than after units are ordered, since knowing the boiler's new position in advance avoids costly changes later.

## Solid floors and pipework routing
A lot of Halewood's estate housing was built with solid concrete ground floors rather than suspended timber floors, which changes how new pipework has to be routed when a boiler moves or a system is upgraded. Rather than lifting floorboards, pipework often needs to run at skirting level or through the loft and down internal walls, which we plan for at survey stage so the finished job looks tidy and doesn't involve unnecessary disruption to floors that are expensive to make good.

Where a chimney breast has already been partly removed upstairs but left in place downstairs, a common feature in these estates, we check it can still safely support any pipework or bracketry being fixed to it before proceeding.

## Mains pressure checks before fitting a combi
Before fitting a combi boiler in any Halewood property, we check the incoming mains water pressure and flow rate. Estate housing built to similar plans doesn't always have identical supply performance, since pipe diameters and distance from the water main can vary street to street even within the same development. Where pressure is lower than ideal, we discuss whether a system boiler with a cylinder would give more reliable results than a combi.

## What the survey covers
A survey before quoting checks the existing boiler and system type, gas supply size, mains pressure and flow, radiator condition, and where the new boiler and flue will go. For back-boiler removals and relocations specifically, we also check what's involved in making good the old boiler's former position and what pipework can be reused versus what needs replacing. The fixed price we put in writing afterwards reflects exactly what the survey finds.

We also use the survey to talk through timescales realistically. A straightforward like-for-like swap in a Halewood semi or terrace with the boiler staying put is often a one-day job, while a back-boiler removal or a full relocation tied to a kitchen refit takes longer because of the extra pipework, flue planning and making good involved. Where immediate installation is wanted, we'll say plainly if a job needs more than a day so it can be planned properly rather than rushed.

## Frequently Asked Questions
Can you remove an old back boiler as part of the installation?Yes, we regularly remove old back boilers in Halewood's post-war housing and plan a new wall-mounted boiler's location as part of the same job.

Can you move my boiler during a kitchen refit?Yes, we coordinate boiler relocation with kitchen refit timelines and recommend involving us at the design stage so the new position works for both the kitchen and the heating system.

What's the cost of a new boiler near Halewood?New boilers are fully fitted from £1,299, with the exact price depending on the work involved and always agreed in writing before we start.

Do you cover Halewood Shopping Centre and the surrounding area?Yes, Halewood is covered as part of our Liverpool area, alongside Knowsley, Halton and St Helens.

Will you need to lift my floors to run new pipework? Not usually. A lot of Halewood housing has solid concrete ground floors, so we generally route new pipework at skirting level or via the loft rather than lifting floors.

Is a combi boiler suitable for a Halewood estate house?Often yes, but we check mains pressure and flow first, since this varies between properties, and will recommend a system boiler instead where a combi wouldn't perform well.

How quickly can work start once I've had a survey?Immediate installation is available once a survey has been carried out and a fixed price agreed in writing.
